Coalition calls on Labor to support revamped family payments bill

Labor must support a “re-engineered” family payments plan to help fund a $3.5 billion childcare package, Treasurer Scott Morrison said as the government unveiled new legislation to reduce family tax payments.

Social Services Minister Christian Porter introduced a revised bill to Parliament on Wednesday that significantly softens former prime minister Tony Abbott’s plans for family tax benefits.

Mr Porter said the new plan was focused “squarely on structural reform” of family welfare payments but contained much of the savings needed to fund the government’s proposed additional investment in the childcare sector.
